Jeremy Alford
I have been a Christian for over 20 years and, together with my wife, have oversight of the children and young people's work. We have two teenage sons. I am a police officer with Hertfordshire Constabulary and work at Watford.
One of the things I love about EBBC is the multi-cultural nature of the church family. As a church we try hard to be warm, welcoming and inclusive and to set God at the heart of all we do. Add to that lively and relevant worship and a long-established and effective social-action programme through the Friend-in-Need Community Centre, and you’ve got a church family that I feel privileged to be a part of and to minister to as part of the leadership team.
Jeremy is married to Helen, a Social Worker, and has 2 smashing sons – Josh who plays the drums at church and is an all round good egg, and Jamie, a great Chelsea fan which pleases his Dad no end!Jeremy is a police officer who is Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Detective Chief Superintendent. He tries to live out his Christian principles amid the brokenness that he sometimes experiences through his work – a real challenge.
Jeremy and Helen have responsibility for EBBC’s work among young people and delight in the growing band of children and teenagers who regularly attend on a Sunday (now numbering up to 40). It’s time-consuming, but incredibly rewarding work and they are eternally grateful for the support that is provided by all those members of the fellowship who help out in the work in a variety of ways.
He says that it is the multi-cultural nature of the church family which is really special to him. As a church we try hard to be warm and welcoming and inclusive and to set God at the heart of all we do. Add to that lively and relevant worship and a long-established and effective social-action programme through the Friend-in-Need Community Centre, and you’ve got a church family that Jeremy feels very privileged to be a part of and to minister to as part of the leadership team.
He believes that a church which does not wish to move on and change risks stagnation and he, therefore, sees the need to widen the leadership team and to bring through young people into positions of leadership earlier than we’ve been able to do to date. Work commitments prevent him putting as much time and effort as he would like into helping drive the church forward in Christ in partnership with Fred, The pastor, and the rest of the team.
After Christ, his family is by far the most important thing in his life. Family holidays are special times and are spent travelling and experiencing new things together. He runs and goes to the gym when he can, but is beginning to accept the onset of middle-aged spread! He is, though, beginning to rediscover his youth in trips to concerts and an annual pilgrimage to the Cambridge Folk Festival with his boys. He is also thoroughly enjoying going with Jamie to watch Chelsea (very occasionally) and Barnet (more often) play football.
