Handy Person Scheme
A local scheme to support independence at home for older people
What is the scheme?
The Barnet Handy-Person scheme is a multi-agency project, which is being coordinated by Age Concern. The scheme's aim is to provide a practical service to older people, by providing minor repairs to their home. There will be a charge for any materials needed for the repair, but there will be no charge for the Handy-Person’s time.
Who is eligible for referral?
The client must be 65 plus
They must live in the Borough of Barnet.
What areas will we provide assistance in?
Maintain & promote independent living to the frail & vulnerable
Prevent falls by providing a safer home environment
Assist discharge from hospital
Assist rehabilitation i.e. recovering from a stroke
What sort of jobs can the Handy-Person scheme cover?
The Handy-Person can only carry out small repairs.
If you need an Occupational Therapy assessment, this is not the scheme for you.
What are the charges?
There will be NO charge for the Handy-Persons work time.
The scheme is NOT MEANS TESTED,
The only cost will be for the necessary materials required for the job requested.
The client can arrange the purchase of the materials themselves, or the Handy-Person will purchase the materials, but the cost will still be borne by the client.
Who can access the scheme
Clients can contact the scheme direct,or through GPs, Statutory Agencies, Voluntary organisations and the Independent Sector
Some of the jobs available on the Handy-Person scheme
Inside the house:
- Replacing a light bulb/s
- Fitting a door chain/spy-hole
- Fitting a new or replacement lock
- Fitting a battery smoke alarm
- Fitting draught excluders
- Unblocking a sink
- Changing tap washers
- Taking down/putting up curtains
- Putting up curtain rail/wire
- Putting up shelves
- Taking up/putting down small areas of floor coverings
- Replacing fuses and plugs (small appliances)
- Moving small pieces of furniture
- Replacing broken toilet seats
- Repairing small areas of bathroom/kitchen tiles
- Fitting doorbells
- Renewing bath sealants
- Re-hanging doors
- Fitting small grab/handrails
- Fitting coat hooks
Outside the house:
- Repairing small areas of fencing
- Repairing garden gates
- Replacing small window panes
- Repair to small areas of rotten window frames
See below for jobs not covered by the scheme All client's whose needs fall outside of the scheme's remit, will be referred on.
Types of Jobs NOT covered by the Handy-Person Scheme
Inside the house:
- Electrical work (apart from plugs & fuses)
- Gas work
- Plastering
- Painting & decorating
- Fitting or repairing central heating
- Mending cookers/boilers/TVs/washing machines or anything still under guarantee
Outside the house:
- Roofing or guttering
- Gardening
- Working on conservatories
- Working on ladders (apart from step ladders)
Any work which is likely to take more than half a day to complete and any job requiring the use of large tools such as cement mixers etc., which the scheme does not possess.
Any work not covered by the organisations insurance policies relating to staff & clients.
